Food, Fun, and Festivals: 10 Awesome Calgary Events to Check Out This Summer

Posted by Elite Home on Wednesday, May 9th, 2018 at 3:15pm.

(Estimated reading time: ~4 minutes)

One of the little-known perks of being a Calgary real estate  agent is that we have some fairly privileged “inside knowledge” on a whole lot of festivals and community events happening in this incredible city.

It makes sense, when you think about it. Our job is to provide clients with as much information as possible about Calgary’s real estate scene, including a full run-down of what benefits each of Calgary’s neighbourhoods and communities have to offer – such as community events and festivals!

In our decades of combined experience helping Calgarians buy and sell their homes, we have learned about more awesome community events and local festivals than you can shake a pancake flipper at… And then some.

So, since summer is right around the corner, we’ve decided to dedicate this blog post to sharing with you a collection of our top 10 favourite Calgary summer events and festivals.

Read on and prepare to let loose for the full run-down...

Summertime and the Calgary Livin’ is Awesome!

There’s nothing like the return of warm weather and longer days to make Calgarians emerge from hibernation and enjoy all things outdoors. From rafting down the Bow to backyard BBQs – if there’s one thing all the good people of this beautiful city love, it’s summertime.

Starting this month, the number of community festivals and seasonal celebrations begin to truly ramp up… And we here at Elite Home Real Estate couldn’t be more excited!

Even though the spring and summer are traditionally the busiest seasons in a realtor’s job, we always make the extra effort to get out and enjoy at least a few of the awesome festivities that Calgary has going on. After all, how can we best serve our clients if we don’t offer a reliable opinion of what a community has to offer?

All work and no play make for some very boring and stressed out people, so go out and get festive!

This doesn’t just apply to realtors – everyone needs to get out and enjoy the gorgeous warm, sunny weather of a Calgary summer!

We understand that it can be hard to tear yourself away from your work. After all, the pioneering spirit of hard work and perseverance are what helped make this city so great.

But believe us when we say that taking the time to go enjoy some of the great community gatherings that are happening throughout Calgary this summer will help you do a better job in the long run. You’ll return to work the next day feeling invigorated, refreshed, and ready to tackle the project at hand… You’ll also have a tale of good times to share with coworkers!

The Perfect Recipe for a Festivity?

Just to let you know, the festival-loving agents of Elite Home Real Estate have a serious bias towards festivals that involve food and live entertainment. If it also includes refreshing beverages and a chance to learn or experience something new, then we love it that much more!

What follows is a list of some of our all-time favourite festivals and community events, along with the dates that they’re happening this year and where you can find them.

1. Calgary Dragon Boat Race & Festival – Saturday to Sunday, Aug. 11-12 from 7am-6pm

This awesome event takes place in and around the Glenmore Reservoire, right by the communities of Palliser, Bayview, Oakridge, and Lakeview. This event offers something for absolutely everyone, including a kids’ zone, live music , beer gardens, food trucks, and dragon boat racing (of course!)

We absolutely love this event for a few reasons – it offers great live music and delicious food and drink options in one of the most beautiful parks in Calgary. It also supports a different worthy cause each year. This year, it supports the Calgary Zoological Society (AKA: The Calgary Zoo).

2. Fourth Street Lilac Festival – Sunday June 3 from 10am-6pm

This festival has everything we love – food, fun, and live entertainment of all sorts! There’s nothing quite like strolling down 4th St. SW while munching on a delicious bowl of poutine, listening to talented local musicians, and watching dancers show off their moves… It’s good times.

There’s something for absolutely everyone here, from interactive games and street vendors to beer gardens and street artists. And it can all be found on 13 city blocks! Just head down to the neighbouhood of Mission, along 4th Street SW, between 13th Ave and Elbow Drive to find it.

What we personally love most is that this has become a great venue for new, up-and-coming local musicians to perform for strong crowds of appreciative listeners! Combine this with a delicious smoothie plus some fantastic food and wild horses would have trouble keeping us away.

3. Marda Gras – Sunday Aug. 12 from 10am-5pm

Much like the Lilac Festival, Marda Gras has something for everyone. But one of the things Marda Gras has that the Lilac Festival doesn’t is something that classic car buffs throughout the city will love – a good, old fashioned “show & shine”.

That’s right, not only can you come down to the vibrant community of Marda Loop and Garrison Woods and enjoy delicious food, awesome live entertainment, vendors and street artists of all types, as well as a truly inclusive and eclectic atmosphere – you can also check out some gorgeous vintage autos!

If you want to show off your own cool vintage car then it’s only $10 to enter. Proceeds from Marda Gras’ Show & Shine go to the amazing charity, Servants Anonymous.

4. GlobalFest – Nightly Aug. 16-25 from 6pm-11:30pm

Who doesn’t love fireworks?! People with sensitive hearing, maybe… But even then, add some awesome music to a spectacular fireworks show and you have a recipe for an amazing night out.

This will be the 16th year that this explosive event lights up the skies above Calgary’s Elliston Park, right by the lovely neighbourhoods of Penbrooke Meadows and Applewood Park. Some of us have been going for its full history and wouldn’t miss it for the world!

With food vendors that cover cuisines from around the world, a good old-fashioned beer garden, and a children’s village that’s put on by Shakers Fun Centre, this fireworks festival has something to brighten the spirits and light-up the eyes of every attendee.

5. Taste of Calgary – Thursday Aug. 9 - Sunday Aug. 12 from 11am-9pm

As you can imagine, this is one of our office’s all-time favourite summertime festivals in Calgary.

It’s like a concentrated mix of everything we look for in a Calgary summer festival:
- Food? Check
- Drink? Check
- Live music? Check
- Outdoors? Check
- Good times? Check

What’s not to love about this festival? Nothing. We love everything about it.

Come find us eating our hearts out anytime between 11am-9pm in the heart of the community of Eau Claire at Eau Claire Plaza, from August 9 through to August 12.

6. Pet-A-Palooza Calgary – Saturday, July 28 - Sunday, July 29 from 10am-4pm

We have a real soft spot for our furry, 4-legged friends here at Elite Home Real Estate, which is why we love Pet-a-Palooza! The largest pet festival on the west coast, Pet-a-Palooza is a 100% pet-friendly, pet-focused festival that welcomes animal friends of all shapes & sizes.

You can run with the bull(dogs), enjoy the Puppy Stampede (which is the cutest kind of stampede you’ll probably ever see), or try your luck at the wiener dog races.

One of the biggest reasons we love this festival is because it fully supports all of our local animal rescue organizations… And those good guys need all the support they can get.

7. McKenzie Lake Residents Association Father’s Day Fishing Derby – Sunday, June 17 from 9am-1pm

Fathers and fishing seem to go together like campfires and s'mores… So what better way to spend Father’s Day than at a fishing derby in the community of McKenzie Lake!

We can tell you from experience that this is a fun (and very affordable) way of celebrating that special guy! Coffee and hot chocolate are provided with a healthy side of Timbits and a wholesome serving of lakeside fun.

Bring your own fishing rod (BYOFR) and go try your luck at catching “the big one” with the father/son/daughter of your choosing.

(Just kidding – it's tons of fun and there are absolutely no sharks in McKenzie lake!)

8. Legacy Book Truck Visits – Tuesday, July 10 & 24 and Saturday, Aug. 11 & 21 from 10am-12pm

We’re so happy that book trucks and traveling libraries are becoming trendy in Calgary! And if you’re in the bustling new community of Legacy in SE Calgary then you’ll get to enjoy the Calgary Public Library’s traveling library – "The Book Truck".

Every other week of this summer, starting in July, The Book Truck will be spending a couple of hours hanging out in Legacy and sharing books and stories with readers of all ages and reading levels.

9. Midnapore Bike Exchange – Saturday, May 12 from 9:30am-12pm

Got an old bike that’s just collecting dust? Then head down to Calgary's established neighbourhood of Midnapore and donate it to the Midnapore Bike Exchange on Friday May 9 at 7pm for a $10 coupon to the upcoming Midnapore Bike Sale on Saturday, May 12!

This is a great way of clearing out the old and finding yourself a nice, newer, more appropriate (and affordable) bike while spending time with others who also want to ride their bicycle.

10. Parkland Summerfest featuring Loverboy – Saturday, June 23 from 8am-10pm

We saved one of the best Calgary summer events for last. Summerfest is a 1-day event in the community of Parkland, organized by the undeniably active and very awesome Parkland Community Association – “Park96”.

Starting at 8am, Parkland’s Summerfest goes all day and has events and activities for the entire family. There’s a Kid Zone, car show, disc golf, bike parade, and of course food trucks and a beer garden. There’s also some truly great live music.

Past Summerfests have seen musical acts like Calgary’s The Dudes and TROOPER. This year, the hit 80s rock band Loverboy is playing and, from what we’re seeing on Facebook and Twitter, people are already getting pretty excited for it!

All of these awesome festivals have something the whole family can enjoy, so be sure to check out at least a few of them this summer – we know you'll be glad you did!
