Saddle Ridge is NE Calgary community that was initially established in 1960 as a rural centre near the Calgary International Airport. It was principally an agricultural area with acreages until the 1990’s when the area started urbanizing as the city’s edge arrived. These acreages still exist on the west side of the community and Saddle Ridge general refers to the built up area on the east side built around the Saddletowne Circle commercial area and LRT Station. Saddle Ridge has a large population of 17,775 people living in 4,330 dwellings. Single family detached homes are the principal housing type here, as with most suburban communities. They account for 77% of the housing share, the next most numerous is apartments with a 10% share. The remainder is split equally between townhouses, duplexes, and converted structures. Saddle Ridge maintains its acreage roots with its location on the edge of the city and many acreages that are still located in the area. Saddle Ridge is one of 3 ‘lake communities’ in NE Calgary and has 3 artificial lakes situated throughout the community. These provide many recreational activities that are available through the resident’s association here.
