Somerset is known to Calgarians for being the southern terminus of the Red Line transit service, and is prized for being a suburban residential community more integrated than it’s peers. This large community was established in 1987 and has a population of 8,751 living in 3,110 dwellings. There is a high concentration of home owners here with 79% of dwellings occupied by the owner, but that certainly doesn’t make it exclusive to homeowners. If you are attracted to a suburban income property, Somerset is a good place to look. 70% of the homes are single family detached homes mostly constructed in the late 80’s and early 90’s. They are built in the suburban style of the time with two levels and street facing garage that extends out from the main dwelling. 25% of the dwellings are low rise apartments, mostly concentrated near the LRT station and shopping district. The remaining 5% are townhouses. The street layout creates mini-neighbourhoods that are not directly connected to one another by roads. A large inner route forms a large circle with small offshoot roads ending in a cul-de-sac. Between these offshoots is green space and bike paths, putting nature right in the backyard of most detached houses here. Somerset’s superior inter-connectivity to the city is provided by excellent road connections – it is located at the intersection of Macleod Trail and Stoney Trail (the Ring Road that is nearing completion). Transit is provided by Somerset LRT Station, which connects residents to jobs downtown. Shopping amenities are mostly provided by Shawnessy Shopping Centre, however the Southcentre Mall is only a 10 minute drive away. Somerset has excellent proximity to Fish Creek Provincial Park, one of Calgary’s most popular outdoor amenities. Somerset is a family centric community that is an excellent and safe place to grow up.
